Notability is an expensive app that serves almost exactly the same function as Google Keep. The app lets you take handwritten notes, type additional text, import and annotate pdf files and record audio. And with all that, it’s still not worth $10: the large number of unnecessary features complicate the app needlessly. Notability works better on an iPad’s wider screen, but most journalists take notes in the field on their iPhones. The app could be used for recording live events, but it gets bogged down by all of the other features, trying to sell itself as everything you could ever need. —Chris McCrory
